Dear Cheadle Parents and Residents, Staffordshire Police are committed to keeping you informed about important matters affecting the safety and wellbeing of our community. With the rise in the popularity of E-bikes and Electric Motorcycles, especially among young people, we want to ensure that parents and guardians are aware of the legal requirements and safety guidelines surrounding these vehicles. E-Bike & Electric Motorcycle Safety: What You Need to KnowElectric bikes and motorcycles are an excellent alternative mode of transport, but it's crucial to ensure that both parents and young riders understand the legal implications and the safety standards associated with them. The Law – What You Need to Know:Age Restrictions:- E-Bikes: In the UK, riders must be at least 14 years old to ride an electric bike (with a maximum motor power of 250 watts). Riders under 14 should not be using E-bikes on public roads or in public spaces.
- Electric Motorcycles: These vehicles are considered motorbikes, so riders need to be at least 17 years old to ride an electric motorcycle on public roads, and they must hold the appropriate licence (either a provisional or full motorcycle licence).
Motor Power & Speed Limitations:- E-Bikes: The motor should not exceed 250 watts, and the bike should not assist the rider beyond 15.5 mph (25 km/h) on level ground. If these limits are exceeded, the bike is considered a motor vehicle, requiring full licensing, insurance, and registration.
- Electric Motorcycles: Riders of electric motorcycles must comply with full legal requirements for motor vehicles, including insurance, tax, and a valid licence plate.
Road Use:- E-Bikes: These can be used on cycle paths, roads, and some bridleways but not on pavements unless specifically allowed.
- Electric Motorcycles: These must be ridden on public roads and should follow the same rules as petrol-powered motorcycles. Riders must wear appropriate safety gear, including a helmet.
Helmets & Protective Gear:- Mandatory Helmets: It is mandatory for all electric motorcycle riders to wear a helmet. While not mandatory for E-bike riders under 14, we strongly advise all young riders to wear a helmet and protective gear, such as knee and elbow pads, to reduce the risk of injury.
What Parents Should Do:Ensure Compliance: Make sure your child is aware of the legal age limits and understands the importance of following the rules.Safety First: Remind your child that wearing the proper protective gear, such as a helmet, gloves, and knee pads, is critical to their safety.Supervision & Safe Riding: Encourage safe riding habits, such as riding within their skill level, avoiding busy roads, and always being visible to other road users, especially at night.Recent Concerns:We have received reports of young people using high-powered electric bikes and motorcycles without the proper licences or safety equipment. This is not only illegal but also extremely dangerous. Staffordshire Police are actively monitoring incidents and will take enforcement action against those riding illegally or irresponsibly. What You Can Do:Talk to Your Teen: Discuss the legal requirements and safety measures with your children. Reinforce the importance of riding responsibly and following the law.Check for Modifications: Some E-bikes and Electric Motorcycles may have been illegally modified to exceed speed or power limits. Make sure the bike complies with legal standards.Report Unsafe Riding: If you witness unsafe or illegal riding behaviour, please contact Staffordshire Police immediately. Quick reporting helps keep our roads safe.Stay Informed:We host regular Community Surgeries at Cheadle Police Station, Please look out for the dates and attend if you wish to discuss road safety, E-bike, and Electric Motorcycle legislation.
